From our ART OF THE AUTO MAG series drop:

These mid-century auto mags were a great glimpse of the post-deco utilitarian modernism that was, in effect, chopping down old cars into speed machines. These weren’t mags meant to forecast Edsel’s new fleet of family models. These were read by abstract gasser gearheads and thrill-seekers smart enough to go crazy on purpose. Frankly, its a miracle the pages of these mags aren’t grease-stained.

But in the 21st century, as we look back on these magazines, we see they provide values far beyond jalopy doctoring. Each is a masterclass in mid-era magazine building. Contained in these issues are unique fonts that range from delightful to delicious, an artful restraint of selective color use from when color still cost money, and exciting action photography of Bel Aires and Shoebox Fords tearing up barren salt flats or flinging mud and smoke like the action painters they inspired.
