“Sex” by Madonna w/ Original Mylar

Here’s Madonna’s ballsy and iconic collaboration with photographer Steven Meisel, “SEX”. An aluminum-bound 134-page agent provocateur that shook the ground it walked on when it hit stores across America in October of 1992.

Upon its drop, it was a certified culture bomb that blew shrapnel into the delicate sentiments of everyone from religions (banned by the Catholic Church) to nations (banned in India and Japan). The Vatican called it “morally intolerable”. The Library banned it.

Meisel and Madonna took 80,000 photographs for the project that featured guest appearances by Isabella Rossellini, Big Daddy Kane, Udo Keir, Vanilla Ice, Naomi Campbell, Joey Stefano, and Princess Tatiana von Fürstenburg.

A great deal of artistic concern went into the packaging—a gorgeous photo of Madonna-in-ecstacy splashed across a sealed mirrored Mylar sleeve and simple text announcing its title. With the book comes the often-discarded photocomic book, “Dita in ‘The Chelsea Girls’”
